Boat on a peaceful lake

Life looms in layers,
alternating joys and sadness
with the futility and purposeful intention
of a life well lived.

I do not claim to see the whole picture yet:
my time to reach higher heights
hasn’t arrived.

I simply watch
and feel
the lightness of being
in the moment;
minute after minute,
hour after hour,
accumulating as impending,
moving images on a film
of a life—I hope—worth living.

Childbirth by Yol Swan

Embraced by the night
and warm water
surrounding your body
and mine,
you pushed through flesh and blood
to catch your first breath
before my eyes.

I welcomed pain as unavoidable,
became a witness
to my instincts,
and watched my body do
what it was meant to do
even without me.

I chanted for you
and for me,
gave my blood and breath
with no reserve,
and delved into a deep
and sacred space within me
to be divinely touched
by your arrival.

You emerged swiftly,
like a little mermaid
awakening from the slumber
and quietude of a dream world,
smiling into my arms
and your father’s,
and filling the room
with light.

I had been waiting for you
for so long,
without even knowing it,
yearning for this sense of purpose,
this unfathomable love,
completely unaware of how
and humbling
the experience would be.

A Walk In the Woods

Forest shot

The trees shape a lush canopy,
a secret passage into a magic world
of mixed browns and greens,
and the silence of lizards.

The leaves rustle behind me
like mischievous little ghosts
uttering soft whispers
and hiding when I look back.

Ever ready to disappear,
a deer watches at a distance
with deep, loving eyes
and nervous curiosity.

The unraveling exuberance
of nature embraces my body
as I touch the heavy breeze,
and moist and sweat cling to my skin.

Oaks and cedars, birches and firs
share their renewing breath,
while blooming magnolias wrap
their fragrant and colorful elegance
around me.

I feel the pulse of the earth,
like a slithering swell of life,
transmuting my every care
into the quiet and joyful awareness
of infinite peace within.
